Acuity Feature Request - enable CC control of Bus Follows

  • 1.  Acuity Feature Request - enable CC control of Bus Follows

    Posted 10-06-2021 15:41
    We use our Acuity to drive a live-audience and broadcast show, and there are a number of occasions where we're taking cameras to broadcast output but leaving other shots on IMAG.

    It would help us enormously to be able to turn individual bus follows (of any type, incl. ME-to-keyer and ME-to-ME) with a custom control.

    For example, I could set a bus follow that maps our PGM row to an IMAG-only keyer. When we want to take a broadcast-only shot, a single button could turn off the bus follow, keeping the last shot on the IMAG keyer, and make that keyer hot to 'lock' that cam to IMAG'.

    If anyone has other ideas on how to simplify this, let me know. I already have CCs on our shotbox that take each cam to IMAG only (or BCST only), but then you have to pick a cam to put on IMAG, whereas using the bus follow example above would always be 'the last cam that was live' and that would work for many situations.

    We also have sections of our show that use ME-to-ME autofollow and being able to turn this on/off with a CC greatly simplifies tasks mid-show for less experienced operators.

    Thanks!

    Are you using separate bus maps for doing "sub tables"?
    Or are they all the same bus map and you are just doing the Bus Link Follows?

    Same bus map across both MEs. ME2 is PGM, split into K1-5: BCST only and K6-8: IMAG only (not a split ME, same PGM for both). Keys 5  (BCST) and 6 (IMAG) are for putting content up on one or the other.

    Any crosspoint can be bcst only or imag only, so we can't designate certain crosspoints as only one or the other.

    Well a feature we have in Carbonite would be great for that.....

    We will look into what we can do to..

    Much appreciated, Les.  I didn't know if there was a technical reason it couldn't be done, or if it just hadn't occurred to anyone to make it possible.

    Work :) ...  Always lot's of stuff for the To Do List and only so many things they can knock off the list :)

    Ahhh.... I had never used the bus copy, but it's exactly what we needed for this, and removes the need for bus follow. Thank you!

    Now if we could only attach and unattach macros to panel buttons from a custom control... :D

    No you can only use a CC to Enable and Disable the Attachment Enable...

    Or make a CC Button (NON Double Down Panels) into an Attachments Enable/Disable button...  DD panels have a dedicated button for that.

    Ok, that's interesting too (the CC to enable/disable). I just built that now and it works. The 'LOCK IMAG' CC disables attachments, uses bus copy to take the current PGM XPT to an IMAG-only keyer, and enables the keyer. Then, our next XPT will go to broadcast only.  After we make that switch, we have to hit the 'ATCH ON' CC, and since all the camera XPTs have the 'UNLK IMAG' CC attached, the IMAG keyer turns off at the next XPT push.

    I was hoping to  use a user variable and CC logic to automatically enable the attachments after the next XPT push following the 'LOCK IMAG' CC. This would eliminate the need to push 'ATCH ON' after a broadcast cut. I wanted to run a CC that would increment the value of a user variable at every XPT cut, and run 'UNLK IMAG' only if the variable = 2. When LOCK IMAG is pushed, that variable gets reset to zero, the next XPT goes to broadcast only and increments it to 1. The following XPT push would increment it to 2, and now would run the UNLK IMAG CC.

    However, I can't see a way to increment a variable within a CC. That would be so useful... every button press matters!

    You can increment the variables..

    In the insert menu, In the Logic section on the top knob scroll to the bottom of the event list to get to set the variable and then you have operands for doing math or just "Setting" the variable to a specific value.

    Reading more what you are looking to achieve with a 1 time change and then go to "automated" mode again...

    You don't need to use the Enable disable of attachements...  You could just use a Local Variable and conditions to begin with..

    Your Lock Imag instead of setting the Attch On and Off ...  Could just set the LockIMAG variable to 0 and do the copy...

    Then on your CCs that you Attach to the Buttons (probably could just make it the same CC..)

    If LockIMAG = 1
      copy BKGD A to KEY Bus x
    Else If LockIMAG = 0
      set LockIMAG = 1
    end if

    That CC would Attach to all the Buttons like you have now but will copy the source the Key if variable is 1....

    Then you press your Lock Imag CC which would copy the bus and then set the Variable to 0

    Your next crosspoint press is not going to do the bus copy and will instead set the variable back to 1 and the second press would now start copying to your keyer again..

    I guess I hadn't looked long enough for the change variable method. This works exactly as I had hoped - I just twisted it around a bit as follows:
    LOCK IMAG CC:
      Var Set LOCKIMAG = 1
      Copy Bus ME2 PGM -> ME2 Key 6
      Cut ME2 Key 6 ON

    UNLK IMAG CC (attached to all camera XPTs):
      If LOCKIMAG == 0
          Cut Keys ME2 Key 6 OFF
      ElseIf LOCKIMAG == 1
          Var Set LOCKIMAG = 0

    By default, IMAG gets PGM unless key 6 overrides the background - so I don't need bus follow or a constant bus copy anymore, only when prepping to take K6 to air.

    Les, I'm not kidding when I say that you are the reason (well, 80% - the other 20% was RossTalk/integration) why we went with Ross! You are greatly appreciated.

    Thank you for the nice comments Bryan :)

    I do enjoy helping out on the complex and fun challenges.  I also love that you are grabbing a hold of the Custom Control Logic and driving your production to leverage that new feature!!

    Wait ... I do have an idea :)

    Map some XPT buttons to be Aux Buses (obviously ones you are not using) ...

    Have PGM bus Echo to that Aux instead of the IMAG Keyer Bus...

    Now when you want it to Follow you have the CC set the Keyer to the AUX Bus XPT ...
    When you want it to "lock down" you use a CC event that does a Bus Copy from the PGM Bus to the Keyer Bus...

    That might just work...
