  • 1.  Screen Coordinates & Replay Zooms

    Hi,

I am thinking through how I want to set up a Carbonite switcher I'll be using for a sports broadcast I'm doing in a couple weeks and had a few questions that I couldn't find the answers to online.

I will be on a traditional Carbonite 2 ME and plan to be in the switcher mode with the two full MEs and 4 MiniMEs.

    1. What are the switcher screen coordinates for a standard 16x9 HD picture when manipulating DVE parameters? For example XY are both at 0.0 in the middle with size 1.0. What are the coordinates at the far left/right and top/bottom?
    2. What is the best way to accomplish zooms for replay purposes on the Carbonite? I'd like to break the screen up into 9 regions (top left, top middle, top right, middle left, middle middle, and so on…) and also zoom in 2x.

I'm used to using local E-MEMs on GV systems to recall those specific coordinates on the ME dedicated for replay and thought I'd do something similar with the Mems on a MiniME.

Would it work if I had Key1 as a DVE with that MiniMEs clean feed as the source and then Key2 as a replay chip that would always stay above that and not grow when doing zooms on Key1 miniME clean? Are there even a clean feed option for miniMEs?

Hope that makes sense. Let me know if I need to elaborate on anything.

    Thank you!

The DVE uses percentages so that it is agnostic to the Pixel count being used....  This has been how Ross Switchers have worked since DVEs were brought into the switcher with the Synergy Series and the Squeeze & Tease 2D DVE  (FYI that was before even I worked at Ross....)

On Carbonite you can go up to 5x on the Zoom before you are "going behind the viewers head" and thus no longer visible...

The Reference point is the "center" of the image.  100% X Pos would be exactly one "screen" to the right.  If I made a 2 box with 50% size then 25% is going to place it to the right with exactly the room needed to keep it completely visible and if you zoom up you would see the center stay put while the image scales up.

1 Full Screen to the Left is -100%...

There is no MiniME Clean Feed you just have the MiniME PGMs... but since there are 4 MiniMEs you could Put MiniME 1 into MiniME 2 Key 1 DVE Key and then use Key 2 of MiniME 2 for the replay graphic...  You would still be able to bring that as a re-entry on the PGM ME.

As for Memories -- you can easily use the Effects dissolve system to do this...  Make Memory 0 of the bank the "normal" position and then you have the 1-9 buttons that you could build the positions for your 9 zoom locations.  using Effects dissolve it will just zoom up at the rate you set when you stored the memory and then you can use 0 again to zoom back to normal as well.  And all of those can even be recalled in a custom control as well.

Thanks for your help Les! The resources available on the Ross website are extremely helpful.

    That makes sense with the Memories and Screen Coordinates. I think I have that figured out for simply zooming into each of the 9 divisions, for example: Mem 0 (Reset Full): X 0%, Y 0%, Size 100% // Mem 1 (Bottom Left): X -25%, Y -25%, Size 200% // Mem 2 (Bottom Middle): X 0%, Y -25%, Size 200% // Mem 3 (Bottom Right): X +25%, Y -25%, Size 200% // Etc.

You mentioned re-entering MiniME 1 into MiniME 2 but can MiniME 2 be re-entered into MiniME 1 (more specifically MiniME 2 PGM into MiniME 1 Key 1, without reversing the system and keeping factory settings)? I know MiniMEs can be re-entered into each other but are their re-entry rules practically the same as those for full MEs, and the re-entry rules for putting an ME source on the background bus the same as putting it as a Key source? Regardless of full ME or MiniME does it always have to go from a smaller-number ME/MiniME to a bigger-number ME/MiniME? I've seen the ME/MiniME timing window graphic and it seems to be suggesting that; however, I thought I've re-entered something like ME 2 into Key 1 of ME 1 before but I could be mistaken.

Lastly, moving away from Zooms and Re-Entry, a question about the Media Stores and Effects from XPression. I'm aware of the ability to capture stills from XPression into the Media Stores. If I need to pull a Fill/Alpha effect that is on XPression to use on the switcher, is there a way to record the Fill/Alpha directly into the Media Stores (and do a Media Wipe with it) or would the best method be to use Ross Talk and trigger the effect to play from XPression?

    I appreciate the help!

    Best,

    Hey Les,

Just doing a quick follow up on this. I guess it boils down to seeing if I can put MiniME 3 into a key on MiniME 2 and then taking MiniME 2 to main PGM.

And then my question about whether there's any way to record video from a source directly into the Media Stores.

    Thank you again,

Sorry ... I must have missed the email letting me know you replied a couple of days ago....

yes MiniMEs can go either way...  There are Timing Slots in the older generation of Carbonite switchers...

    MiniME-ME1-MiniME-ME2-MiniME

If yo put a MiniME into another MiniME then you can go into ME2 (PGM)  but you can't go into ME1... and even with doing MiniME - MiniME - ME2 you could then still put a MiniME after ME2 as well..

You can not "record" video into the MS you can only capture a still...  In XPression you can right click on a TakeID and export it to  images which will give you a TGA or PNG sequence you can load....

Yes I would say that using RossTalk and controlling the XPression is way better :)...

This is an old video ... wow time flies.... but it is really good for workflow examples of putting the Carbonite and XPression together
