  • 1.  Can we use 'bumpmap' to displace graphics text like this?

I'm an AfterEffects guy trying to develop a look for show we're doing in Xpression. Want to use a normal map to make a wavy displacement effect on lower thirds and other graphics, similar to this example below. Is this possible?

    XPression supports normal maps.

@Simon Redmile How would you suggest applying a normal mask to distort a graphic in this way? I see that a map (png, image file) can be applied to a material, but how does one distort multiple objects in a scene with either a png or avi map?

Have you tried render views yet?

You could make a scene with the grey and the text in and then you make a material either in another scene or even in the same scene but using a different camera or you can use something called owner scene.

Either way you make a material  that has a render view shader that's looking on your quad and text objects which will make it all one "flat" texture, then add a bump map shader on that same texture and the bump will affect it all as one thing. Pretty sure that will achieve what you want.

I've tried the RenderView approach using another scene as the source and a BumpMap applied as you show above, but my result looks like this:

Is there a way to warp multiple objects in a scene that resembles the video sample above? We aren't committed to a Bump/Normal Map method if there is a better way to achieve this type of effect.

The only way I have been able to sort of do what you want is using refeaction but its going to be a lot of work to get that look you are aiming for.

You could try using the SINE effect in the effects tab.  I use it to make a waving flag type effect.  You may be able to apply it to your situation.  I'm not a at a machine so not certain if SINE effect can be applied to a group with multiple objects.

@sctv I am pleased it sent you down the right path.

@Steve Thanks for this idea, I can confirm it works if you use the render view trick I talked about earlier.
