My experience has almost always been very smooth with Carbonite firmware updates.
I mean, if you have a ton of complicated customization, do the upgrade when you have a few hours to devote to making sure everything is still working as it should, but people do overworry about it. (And 7.1 is a huge feature release for a .x version, people should absolutely do it asap!)

Subject: How the Carbonite and TD2 Update went for us: Easy
I know some are hesitant to perform software upgrades or would rather wait until their control room is dark for a month because of fear of issues. If it helps, here is how it went for us. Our experience differed slightly from what the .pdf says, which may give some pause during the process. In short, for us at least, it was easy.
We upgraded our Carbonite Ultra from 7.0.1 to 7.1 and our TouchDrive TD2 from 1.5 to 2.0. We uploaded the files to the hardware using Dashboard on an attached PC. For Carbonite, the menu path is Navigation Menu / System / Upgrade. For TouchDrive, it's Configuration / Upgrade Panel. There are now two versions of software for TouchDrive and you need to note which version of hardware you have to know which file to use. This is mentioned in the .pdf.
The Carbonite file upload took about 10 minutes. It seems to be a big file. You need to notice the file upload is complete. Press "Upgrade" and a box appears asking you to "Please Wait". Eventually this box goes away. After approx 10 minutes (I wasn't watching this expecting it to take longer) the upgrade was done. Following the install guide, I power cycled the frame. The guide indicates its only then that the upgrade takes place although Dashboard indicated the new version was loaded. The entire process was around 20 minutes with no issues.
The guide indicates the TD2 upgrade could take 30 minutes. Ours took about 1 minute. It was so fast, I wasn't sure it happened. I power cycled the panel just because.
Following the upgrade, we found all our shifted sources were removed. Ross added multiple "shift" layers and that blew away our sources. I don't think that's mentioned in the .pdf. It's a simple matter to remap. And as with most of the upgrades, you may find your Media Manager list blank and any effects failing to call up graphics. Reloading the Media Manager tab will bring all that back. Your USB was not erased. We have found no effects or CC issues.
Good luck with your update.
