Kerning in Sequencer

  • 1.  Kerning in Sequencer

Came across this already posted message, but did not see any responses to it. So I thought I would re post the question since this something I am interested in knowing if there is a way to do it.
"I would like to be able to kern fonts on L3rds from the sequencer side.  This is especially helpful when using a Datalinq spreadsheet to create L3rds and such.  I know that you can accomplish this on the Layout side ("Cntl +" and "Cntl +") .  But when you send that L3 graphic (with published text field) to the sequencer and change the text you lose the kerning."

    Any information would be great!

It'll be good to know if this function is possible too...I was working at Glastonbury this past weekend and I had Lower Thirds with times on, when typing out say 8.15pm, it looked very odd....in the end I had to create separate templates and not 'Template Publish' any elements, which defeats the purpose of just making one template and adapting it in Sequence.....

    Hi Phil.
The way I am using the text scene in my sequencer is to quickly build winning dollar amount for a game show. When there is a comma, $17,528 let's say, the comma will be to far away from the 7. Over the years on my show "they notice" at times the spacing is to big a gap. I understand that those spaces come with the way fonts are built, but we tighten up those spaces. I can only do that in the layout area, as we know. Would be quicker for me to build out 7 dollar amounts in the sequencer then 7 different scenes. Control +, Control - in the sequencer would be great!
Phil I think this is what you are wanting also.

What happens if you actually perminantely change the kerning as part of the font here.

Hi Red - unfortunately this makes no difference to the text spacing.

Phil, I have wondered this as well...  I have never known the "Kerning" parameters to actually effect any kerning.  Any XPression super users care to weigh in?

It'll be good to get a solution to this.....it's going to get frustrating making every strap in Layout you want to do 'Character Kerning' on.......actual letter spacing on words are not too bad, its numbers that look odd on-screen.

When you say the numbers look odd, do you have any examples?

    Two examples attached.

As you can see from the typography on the time (numbers 8.15pm) - one example shows the typography widely spaced (which is a lot more noticeable on a large TX monitor) and the other which has been 'kerned' in Layout.

Ideally it would be great to have an option in Sequencer to kern individual characters/numbers when using one template only rather than having to make a load of straps in layout and individually adjusting the typography.

Not sure if it helps in terms of style but it might make it more consistent look of the templates. You can force the numbers to be mono spacing.

Obviously this won't tighten things up, it effectly turns kerning off for numbers only.

Probably not what you are going for here but I thought it might help to at least keep it consistent.

Regarding Kerning from the sequence side of XPression, I believe that would be a request to the XPression team as I don't see a way to do that myself unless I have missed something.

I take that back actually, you can open the font manager which will allow you to get at the kerning without going to layout.

Thanks Red, I have tried this and by changing the value percentage in the kerning box, makes no difference.

I suspect if it did, it would probably change the 'kerning' to the whole typeface and not just the typography of the 'time' like you can in layout by placing your cursor in the correct postion and then CTRL + or -

I guess this is something which needs to be provided in the next software release?

It's unlikely to make the next release but perhaps future releases.

I don't have anything to add to the kerning discussion, but this may be related.  This is a technique I've used to expose the "autosqueeze max width" parameter in sequencer, which can sometimes be helpful...  [see attached photo]

Thanks everyone for looking into this. The Control + and - is what would be great in the sequencer at some point.
