  • 1.  Managing "virtual" sources

    Posted 07-17-2022 10:27
    Hello,

We are new Ultrix users and we are trying to find the best and easiest way to achieve some stuffs.
With the MADI IN/OUT for emb-deemb audio channels, we don't need external emb-deemb anymore.
But in the past, it was "easy" to manage, I explain:

As the embbeders were externals, they were on our old Harris router as destinations and sources.
So, for example a PGM output we wanted to attach some audio, we routed it to the EMB, then the "PGM with audio" was avalaible as source (the embedder output was a source).
Then it was easy to pass it to more destinations (externals, feeds, etc.).

Is there a way to achieve something like that with a "virtual" source on the Ultrix, or something ?
For the moment, we have to make 2 Xpoint to put somewhere an embedded output:
    - Xpoint of the video source to, for example, an external output or a feed (destination)
    - Xpoint of the "emb" source (which correspond to a group of MADI inputs channels) to the same destination
And we have to achieve this for every destinations we need to pass an embedded signal.
I think there is also a huge risk of error (forget to route the "EMB" source to the destination => result: video without the audios..)

For the de-embedding part, we found an easy way to get back something identical to the past:
We made some destinations "DMB 1" "DMB 2" etc.. with the requested MADI outputs slices
We just have to route sources we'd like to do de-embedding to those destinations and the corresponding channels are routed to the right MADI "slices"

    Thanks !

The easiest way to do this is to program the database to reflect the combinations of video and audio you want. For example you want program video from your switcher but audio from your mixer that comes in via MADI and combine them as a source. (Let's assume you only have 3 levels for the example but it works the same with all 17 levels.) Level 1 is video, level 2 audio channel 1 and level 3 is audio channel 2. In the Source table, program the port the video comes in for level 1, and the two MADI channels in levels 2 and 3. Then do it again for any other combination. Maybe label it something like PGM EMB. You can have multiple entries like this, even with the same video or audio used amongst these multiple entries many times.

On the destination side you can do the same thing, but you can only have a port listed once in the destinations table.

You can also have ports follow other ports on the destination side which can create interesting workflows as well.

    Hope that helps.

I have this same questions but the difference is I want to change my audio source between a few inputs to be embedded on most of the outputs. Since I'm changing them, I can't program it in the source definition. I thought the virtual sources and destinations were like virtual re-entries as other routers have. Is that not the case? I'd like Virtual DST 1 to be reentered as Virtual SRC 1 so I could route the appropriate levels of Virtual SRC 1 to all my outputs that need the audio and then I only have the one destination to make a route between sources. I can't seem to find documentation in the manual about what the virtual sources and destinations actually do and how to set them up.

Hi Matthew, unfortunately we cannot currently re-enter virtual destinations as sources. What you might be able to do is set up Destination Follows for all the destinations that you want to have the same source? So you would pick a primary destination, and tell all the secondary destinations to follow that output. Everytime you make a route to the primary destination, all the secondary's will take the same source. Sort of like a DA. This works in the PIPs of Ultriscape too. If at some point you need to route a unique source to one or many of the secondary destinations you can, but as soon as you route something to the primary destination, all the secondarys will follow the primary again. Let me know if that makes sense.

Definitely makes sense. Can you specify a breakaway route as a follow? When I looked, it seems like destination follows are for all levels. For my destinations, I have various video sources as this is an Ultrix Acuity set up as a standalone switcher. So the video routes are fairly static. It's the audio that's changing sources.

    Hello Everyone,

Is this scenario perhaps possible with V6?

    Thanks!
