My personal preference is to dock both the material manager and the font manager in one of my saved layouts. This is my own I used most often for design.
I like ot have my scene tree much larger on the left so I can see more of it, I have pinned the project manager and the scene manager to the left. I have added the material and font manager to my layout as well as the object tool bar which saves me have to switch to the transform tab in the object inspector as well.

So your materials you still see in the Object Inspector tab, but you only access your materials in the Material Manager. Thanks for your note. But still odd that the materials cannot be arranged better in the Object Inspector area.
