  • 1.  Recall ID Based on Take ID

    Posted 9 days ago

Hi, currently exploring a new workflow for our spotbox elements. Our elements come to us in an XPression project and have traditionally been played out of XPN Studio. I'm looking to increase the amount of control the TDs have over these elements, as well as add new channels. I am looking to use our Clipstore to potentially shift away from playing out rendered scenes to exporting videos and playing them via server channels.

I'd ideally like to be able to make a take item list that has all our elements in it, with their Take IDs corresponding to the recall IDs we'd use in the clip server so replacing clips would be easy. However, when using the built in video exporter in xpression, I can add the clip to the clip server, but I have no way of setting the recall ID from the interface. Is the only way to do this via the filename parsing using INCoder? I can do this if need be, but would ideally like to take a link out of the chain where possible.

    Thank you

    Hi Jack,

Thanks for reaching out - sounds like you're working on a smart evolution of your workflow.

Can I ask which switcher you're using?

    Hi Shawn,

We're using Kayennes. It looks like this option I was experimenting with is not viable for us anymore, as some of our scenes use continuous animation controllers, which don't play nice with files rendered out it seems.

    Jack,

YOu can use the Clip Browser to change the Recall ID by right-clicking on any item in the individual Clip and choosing EDIT. There is a field called RECALL ID, which will allow you to enter in whatever text you want (RECALL IDs do not need to be numbers, but Take IDs do...). When a Clip is added to a Sequencer (Playlist) the first time it is added to the list the Recall ID will be used for the Take ID if nothing else is already using that Take ID. The second time it is added to the same sequencer, the next available number (highest from the numbers already in use for Take IDs in that sequence) will be used as the Take ID .

in your system there should be an applciation called XPression Clip Store Manager. Launch it

in teh Clip Store Manager, there is a section in the middle of the UI, if your object browser (Choices on the left side of the UI) has CLIP STORE selected. Locate the input field titled ON DUPLICATE RECALL ID (IN SAME PROJECT) which has the choices:

    • Remove Recall ID from existing clip
    • Delete existing clip when it has no subclips
    • Delete existinf clip and subclips

choose whichever option suits your organization, but that will let you replace a file with the recall ID in the file name and handle the existing file as designated above.

If you are using Clips workflows, then you also have PBUS, if you like.

on the main menubar of XPression, while in the Sequencer, click on DISPLAY>PBUS Mapping. THis will present you with a UI panel which allows you to set up PBUS for your XPression Clips unit and configure PBUS for your system. This will allow you to create a drag-and-drop workflow to add PBUS items to the list which you can then trigger from almost any switcher, without any third-party hardware in-between your switcher and XPression.
here is a quick video on how to set that up.

    Hey Patrick,

Thanks for your response. I actually need kind of the opposite workflow. I need an XPression studio (machine A) to render the clips to the shared clipstore, to by used by other XPression Clips instances (machines B and C). I have the take items (scenes to be rendered) in the sequencer on machine A, with their take items set to what I want the recall ID to be when I export them to machines B and C. When I select them and go to export, I can export them by their TakeID, but I cannot export them with a recall ID, and I don't want to then have to go manually type in the recall ID in the clip browser or when I put them into the sequencer on B and C. As of now, the only method I can figure out to automatically associate a recall ID with something exported from XPression A is to export it with the take ID as a trailing file name, then have INcoder transcode it again and use the trailing digits function to associate it.

Hopefully that makes sense, thank you!

Are you putting clips from the clip browser directly into the Sequencer or are you putting them into a Scene with a published field?

I'm rendering the clips from a scene, to the clip server, then importing them into the sequencer on a different XPression.

    Jack,

    I understand, now...
you're gonna love some of the new features coming in XPression 12.5 in a few weeks. users will be able to select clips in their Clip Browser and Export selected clips into a single file, which can then be brought over to another XPression system and Imported to the clip browser on that system. This will simplify the workflow quite a bit. Same Dialog is used to IMPORT the file on the recieving end.
