Looking to replace our Carbonite MultiMedia with the next cool kid on the block. Ultra seems like it should be the next step but there's a few things holding us back .
1 - The boot time, last time I booted one up that I was playing with was looong, felt abnormally long.
I didn't actually time it but someone told me it close to 7 minutes ! To me, that's totally unacceptable. -that's close to a double add break duration  or in a live situation , almost time to start a walkout if vision was integral to the show.
I know some people will say, you should have a UPS,  but they can fail too. My experience is UPS's have caused more problems than the  actual mains power .
Either way, 7 minutes would make me uncomfortable. Operationally it would make me feel that I'd have to notify the client that in the event of a glitch of some kind, please expect it to take 7 minutes for the vision mixer to come back online. Everything else , including our Cisco network switches , is about 2 - 3 minutes tops.
2 - Second thing is the compromises to have to accept in UHD mode for a mixer of that price range. Feels like UHD should be standard issue these days with I out loosing capabilities .
Love to hear others thoughts on this.
Is there something you can do to speed up the mixer boot time to closer to 2 minutes tops?
Is there a new version in the making that improves on the above ? The Ultra has been kicking around for a while.

    Hi Alex,

I will answer these in order.

1 -- I just did a restart of my Ultra running v9.1.4 connected to one of the first TD panels we made.  from restart to being able to cut on PGM was 2 mins and 26 seconds.  DashBoard was up another 2 mins and 20 seconds later.  The DashBoard connection will connect after the switcher is up and running.  I am not sure where 7 mins is coming from but I have also seen issues where DashBoard on a Mac can take even longer if it is not closed and then opened.

2 -- UHD required 4 x the resources. Event he Brand new Carbonite Ultra 60 is not able to be 100% 1 for 1 UHD to HD feature set.  Ultra goes from 24 inputs to 18 inputs.  If that is an issue you can look at the Ultra 60 which is able to keep all inputs (it has modular I/O so can be 12/36 or 60 inputs) however it still has to make some compromises on bandwidth and speed where it sees that a maximum of 8 inputs per block of 12 can have a Frame Sync and Format Converter.

Again we can't fit everything to match 1-1 to HD mode.  Ultra 60 UHD there are 2 modes of operation to maximize choice 3 ME with 6 Keyers or 2 ME + 2 MiniME + UltraScene.

Ultra is a current product and what was just release is the Ultra 60 and the new Ultra Solo to get the smaller series into the UHD playing field.  Loading an Ultra60 with 36 inputs might be the solution is your looking for the most recent release.

    Thanks Les

I dont currently have access to one right now but I'll see if I can get hold of one myself to re-test . I mentiend the 2min 40 seconds of you units boot time and neither of two Ultra owners I know  said their booted that quicky to their knowledge.

I went to the STATUS Page in DashBoard on the TD2S (Original Intel Q7 Model) on the Power Tab I pressed the Restart Switcher.  I confirmed restart and started the stop watch on my phone.  Once the panel was up again (it loads the app from the frame and has a progress like bar by lighting up the buttons in a solid colour then snaps to config) I was cutting on the PGM bus and I pressed the LAP button to keep that time while waiting for the DashBoard Connection on the TD2S to come back and be able to switch to the Live Assist Page.

Ultra is on v9.1.4 and the TD2S (Intel Q7) is running version 3.0 build 440 with DashBoard v9.10.1 on it.

    Thanks Les

I think your mention of the Dashboard connection tacking on another few minutes (closer to 5- 6 minutes) to the total boot time is what I had seen as the Ultra was being control only by Dashboard  - no control panel

Obviously the way the thing is programmed to boot up , the panel control is prioritized and other services , like Dashboard, kick in after all the booting up processes have complete.

    Thanks
