Overdrive CC - Take Prep

After recently upgrading to version 12 of Vision software - I am trying to use the Overdrive special custom control, take and prep, rather than using the GPI trigger to do so. I am not able to get this custom control to fire at all. The release notes that give information about this new custom control do not give any other specific information.

    Hi Jason,

What version of Vision and OverDrive are you now Running? The Feature above requires that both are supporting the new function.

We are now on Overdrive version 10.0.10.

The release notes for Vision version 12 state that some features require a certain version of Overdrive, but this feature did not state any Overdrive version requirements.

What version of OD supports this feature?

Unfortunately, I believe you need v12 of Overdrive to support that switcher functionality.

Also, are you sure you're on v12 of Vision software? It should be v16. Either way, v12 is needed on the Overdrive side as Overdrive has to be able to accept the command.

    Thank you Chris.

Yes, my mistake, V16, not V12 of Vision.

By the way, you were a great OD trainer!

If I build a custom control to run this "Take Prep" command and attach that CC to a template, should it take the line in OverDrive that is in AFTER the line this CC is attached to? Example...I have a template that is a Camera w/a VIZ channel. The template clears the VIZ channel when it is in preset, and right now I have a GPI set to run the next line in OverDrive (the VIZ channel) so that we see it animate on over the camera shot. Could I achieve that same thing using the "Take Prep" command in a CC instead of the GPI?

Correct, though you may need some frames of delay for the next template properly recall. Just be careful with this, because if the OTS is dropped, or deleted, it's taking the next element in the rundown come hell or high water.

Thanks! Oh yes!!! We have had that happen quite a few times with the way I have it set up now using the GPI. I just didn't know if switching it to the "Take Prep" CC might be a better option in any way.

Fundamentally it's not that much different. Just a little cleaner.

One thing I have done with other CG systems *cough cough* like XPression is put a pause at the beginning of the animation. Then I put the CG line BEFORE the camera item. Then on the Camera template, I put a CG resume custom as an auto-run. I presume Viz can do the same thing, where you take the CG item and it effectively is blank, and the resume brings the OTS in.

Amy and Chris - What we do for this type of scenario with viz is we are setup to have viz load graphics straight to "viz program". This way when a shot is taken in OD and the proceeding line in OD is a viz graphic to be keyed - it loads and plays the graphic as soon as it's PREVIEWED in OD. It was a bit weird getting use to this setup, but once accustomed to it, it proved to work very well.

Amy - an alternate option that you could take (depending on the OD version), is to make a transition that is a CC. The CC that would become a transition would have the element that clears your viz channel, a short delay, then a cut on the switcher (to take your next line in OD). This route would clear up the problem of if the line in OD was dropped you wouldn't take the wrong thing next, as you discussed.

Chris - your setup with an example of a pause and resume with Xpression is a great idea, and good to know. We haven't needed to go that route with viz, as the force to program has been quick enough and we don't have a need for viz preview.

    Thanks for all the ideas!

I have a question about the "Take Prep" command. I went ahead and switched to this OverDrive command, instead of the old GPI we had built, in all of our "animate" on effects. Now, once in a blue moon, the "Take Prep" doesn't work. There is no pattern or obvious reason why this is happening. Any ideas?

Amy, just to clarify - are using the GPI Take and Prep (done by making a custom control GPI, then assigning in OD the corresponding GPI to be a do-take and prepare) or are you using the newer custom control "OverDrive take prep" which only works with OD version 12 or newer?

With the older GPI take-prep I have had the same issue with once in awhile it fails. But I have been told that the newer "OverDrive take prep" should not fail. Additionally, I read that version 12 should cue custom controls in a look-ahead fashion to prevent failure. I haven't had the privilege to use version 12 yet though.
