  • 1.  Split Key with Overdrive

    Posted 01-14-2026 13:47

    Hello,

I'm doing a split key with an Acuity switcher and it's working as it should so I stored it into a memory. Now, I want to use this memory with Overdrive so I have build a template with this memory but when I recall my template, I see my split key for a second and then, when Overdrive push the source that have been programmed, the split key become a Auto-select key again....

So my question is, can we do slit key in Overdrive and how ?

    Thanks

    Hi Guillaume,

Start by checking the template. Under ME's and Buses, there is the Bus Selection area, where you can choose the key and available channels to which a source can be selected. This example is from a Carbonite switcher. This screenshot is also from v24, so depending on your versioning, the UI could be different, or channel selection unavailable.

So I checked on the template but no luck.

    Here is what happening:

I build a split key (not an Auto Select key) on the Acuity as you can see on the picture 1, Bar HD is the fill and ME2ST1 is the alpha. When I recall the memory on the switcher, it's working perfectly. When I recall it with Overdrive, I see for a second my original memory but then, it's seem that when Caprica push the source that have been assign to key 1, I loose the alpha portion of my split key and it switch back to a Auto Select key as you can see on picture 2, so I loose my alpha channel of my Split Key

    Any ideas ?

It appears (based on the button colors) that you have taken an auto select key, and split it's signals into a fill and key so you can change the signal in the fill, but maintain the alpha signal to cut the desired shape. It's still an auto sel key, just with different signals as opposed to a graphics engine. When OverDrive recalls the memory, it recalls it as stored, but then the template sends its data and the key changes entirely over to the new signal using it's key and fill signals, breaking your split.

In my earlier screenshot, the bus assignment only shows channel 1, because it's not connected to an Acuity, but if it were, you would be able to overwrite signals in channel 1 or 2 of the key. In the case of your split key, ch1 is the BAR HD and ch 2 is the ME2ST. If you can't make assignments to the individual channels within a key from the template editor, that's what needs to be addressed. Otherwise, OverDrive will always populate the key fully instead of only the fill or key channel as you need.

What version are you on with Acuity and OverDrive?

    Do you have any

So I did try to populate channel 2 of my key 1 but it's still reset my split key to an Auto select key with the source choose for channel 2 as the fill source of an Auto Select key.

My Acuity is at version 9.2p and our Overdrive system is at 22.3.4

I have found a way around using Custom Control attach to my memory but it would still be easier if it could work as other memory and template work with Overdrive

    Thanks

    Hi Guillaume,

Since you also run Caprica you could try to create a custom control that recalls that memory with Preview Relative as destination.

Then add that custom control on the Overdrive template, and set it to run when Prepared with a short delay (10 frames or whatever Overdrive requires to prepare the shot).
